My name is Joshua Bartlett, and I’m the founder, owner, and editor of I’ll Just Fix It Myself.
Let me be upfront about what I am and what I’m not: I’m not a licensed plumber, electrician, or HVAC tech. I’m a dad who has spent about 19 years fixing up the places I’ve lived – first a string of rentals, and later my own home – because I’d rather figure it out and fix it than pay someone to do what I can learn to do myself.
That adds up to a lot of hands-on time with the problems a typical homeowner or renter runs into: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, lawn care, and more.
I’ve unclogged toilets, but I’ve also replaced entire toilets.
I’ve changed a light switch, but I’ve also traced grounded wires through walls to fix power issues, swapped breakers, and run new electrical lines to other areas of the house and outdoors.
I’ve mowed the lawn, but I’ve also graded a backyard, built a foundation for an above-ground pool, and put in underground sprinkler and drainage systems.
I’ve painted a bedside table, but I’ve also repainted whole-house interiors, removed popcorn ceilings, and replaced doors and trim.
Which brings me to my philosophy:
Do it myself and save some money in the process!
My goal with this site is to help people like me learn how to fix things around the house, keep up with preventive maintenance, and get comfortable with the idea that you can do it yourself – and to be honest about the jobs where the smart move is calling a licensed pro.
My own experience only goes so far, so I don’t ask you to rely on it alone. Every guide written or updated under this site’s current process is researched against manufacturer documentation and safety sources like the CPSC and NFPA, with sources cited inline – so you can check the facts behind the advice instead of taking my word for it. The older library is being brought up to that same standard, guide by guide.
