Fridge Water Line Leaking: Causes, Shutoff Steps, and Fixes

If water is pooling behind or under the refrigerator and you have an ice maker or dispenser, shut the fridge water supply off first — then unplug the fridge before you dig around wet electrical gear. If the existing line is brittle plastic that has been heat-cycled behind a hot fridge for a decade, replacing the whole run with the tubing your current fridge manual specifies is cleaner than stacking repair couplings.

After a filter change, drips at the head are often an incomplete twist/push lock, a missing O-ring cover still on the new cartridge, or a cracked cartridge. Water can leave the household line perfectly dry and still puddle from the appliance side:

When to call a plumber vs an appliance tech

  • Plumber: active leak at the saddle/tee under the sink or in the basement; damaged household pipe; need for a code-friendly shutoff and new branch; repeated failures on clamp-on valves; any situation where the fridge shutoff will not stop the water.

  • Either / both: you cannot tell which side of the rear compression nut is wet without pulling the fridge — a careful tech visit that starts with shutoff and inspection is still cheaper than guessing wrong twice.
  • Stop and escalate immediately: water near electrical outlets, ceiling stains from a line in a cabinet above, or a leak you cannot find after shutting the fridge valve (house-side failure).

Not every puddle is the water line

Before you buy twenty feet of copper, rule out look-alikes:

  • Clogged defrost drain — meltwater on the freezer floor or under crisper pans; GE’s water-on-floor page points many styles here first.
  • Door left ajar / heavy frost melt — Frigidaire notes extended open-door icing that later dumps water.
  • Leveling / blocked drain pan — condensation management, not supply pressure.

Those paths need different fixes. Replacing a perfect water line will not clear a plugged drain tube.
